Why did MCSI Stop Offering Classes in 2008?

At the end of 2007, with little warning, Macquarie University modified its relationship with MCSI.  This led to much lower student enrolments in 2008 than expected.
In semester 1 2008 an appeal was made to MCSI students and supporters requesting their support to:

1. Raise $100k in extra support by the end of June 2008.

2. Get 100 students enrolled in our classes for Semester 2 by the end of July.

Supporters responded with great generosity and pledged the funds needed within a short 2 week period.  We wish to express our thanks to all those who contributed to our Fighting Fund for MCSI. We received so many comments, ideas and messages of support, along with generous donations and pledges. MCSI obviously had a profound impact on the lives of many over its ten years of operation.

However, the target of 100 students enrolled in semester 2 2008 proved harder to reach (despite having easily surpassed this number of students in many previous semesters).  The MCSI Board agreed that this figure would demonstrate our capacity to attract students across many Australian campuses, as well as on our home campus of Macquarie (despite no longer being a natural part of the enrolment process there).   Unfortunately, we didn't make it. We had around 70 students enrolled and based on these numbers the Board felt that the responsible position was to teach those students, but not move forward with efforts to attract students in 2009.

Sadly, we closed the doors of the MCSI office on Friday 5 December 2008.  The MCSI Board will continue to function for a period of time to finalise the business and to further consider the future.  Any developments of interest or significance will be posted on this website, or emailed to those subscribed to the e-newsletter.

Once again, we thank everyone who has supported us and are encouraged that our work of providing Christian perspectives in tertiary education really is considered valuable by so many people.
