Schools with a Christian ethos and focus make up a significant proportion of the private sector within Australia, yet there are few opportunities for students to gain an understanding of the theory and practice of Christian schools as part of their undergraduate Education degrees.
Now, however, students have the opportunity to incorporate a specialist strand in Christian education as part of their undergraduate degree programs, and to earn a Certificate in Christian Education from Macquarie Christian Studies Institute in the process.
Macquarie Christian Studies Institute Ltd (MCSI) is a private provider of higher education based on the campus of Macquarie University. Thanks to a creative alliance with the university, and in partnership with Christian schools, students can include MCSI units in their Macquarie Education degrees, thus enabling them to complete a specialist strand in Christian Education.
As part of the Certificate Programs students complete school observation units which provide an orientation to teaching and learning in Christian faith-based schools.
The MCSI certificates will be of particular interest and value to students who are interested in seeking employment in schools with a Christian ethos, as principals will be able to see that they have a demonstrated interest in and understanding of a Christian perspective on education.

Awarding of the Certificate in Christian Education requires successful completion of the following elements:
Students who complete 4 MCSI units are eligible for the MCSI Certificate in Christian Studies. This is not an accredited award, since the credit for studies with MCSI goes towards a student's university degree. Rather it constitutes a statement of attainment and demonstrates that a student has completed a program of study in the area of Christian Studies.
Students who undertake the Certificate in Christian Studies are also offered the opportunity to receive mentoring from a Christian professional in their area of study, or anticipated future profession.
Any 4 MCSI units taken for credit may be counted towards the certificate. A maximum of one unit taken on a not-for-credit basis may be included towards the certificate.
Students may enrol in the Certificate in Christian Studies on a non-award basis (i.e. the subjects are not credited towards a university award or degree program). Non-award students complete the required assessment for each subject and are awarded a grade for each subject upon completion. After the 4 subjects have been completed the student is eligible to receive the MCSI Certificate. This is not an accredited award, rather it constitutes a statement of attainment.
